Fox Friday: Steam Bent Mobiles and … Cabbage!
Interested in knowing what a propane tank, some thin ash wood, and a cabbage all have in common? We are too. In this 3-hour workshop, students will be given a demonstration on how to steam bend small pieces of wood using a 14-ounce propane tank and a hot pipe. After which, students will have the opportunity to produce their own curls, swirls, and bends. Before assembling these pieces into dynamic wooden mobiles, students will learn and practice the magic of cabbage juice, unfolding the extensive range of colors that are contained within the anthocyanin pigments. At the end of this class, students will produce a wooden mobile, made of small steam bent pieces, dyed using cabbage juice pigments and natural ph activators.
Instructor: Annamarie and Nick are in their last year of the MARCH3 graduate program here at Sam Fox. Friends first and shop safety buddies second, this duo is notorious for keeping the Givens shop electricity bill at an all-time high! This summer, when not biking or cooking an extraordinary amount of empanadas, they spent their time assisting and teaching woodworking to the kids at Craft Alliance and Building Futures located here in St. Louis.
