Weitman Gallery

Established in 1995, Weitman Gallery was originally located off campus in the Lewis Center building in University City. In January 2008, a dedication ceremony was held for the gallery’s new facilities, which are housed on the lower level of Steinberg Hall, immediately adjacent to offices and studios for photography.

The gallery is named after former Washington University photographer Herb Weitman, BSBA50. For more than four decades, he played a vital role in presenting images of the University to the nation and the world. In the late 1960s, he helped to found the photography program, and stayed on in his role as head of photographic services until 1994. Weitman’s ability to capture University life brought him acclaim both on campus and nationally. He was named the “Photographer of the Decade” for all of U.S. higher education by the American Alumni Council in the 1960s, and he received the honor again in the 1980s from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). In addition to his role as a University photographer, Weitman traveled across the globe taking pictures, and was the official NFL photographer for the St. Louis football Cardinals.
