University Collaborations


The Sam Fox School benefits from collaborations with partners, departments, and centers across the University. Students and faculty are able to access the unparalleled resources of a tier-one research university while working with peers across disciplines on the most urgent issues of our time. These partnerships support a wide variety of activities, from funded research and fellowships, to special workshops and networking opportunities.


Collaborative Partnerships and Initiatives


International Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (InCEES)

Founded in 2007, InCEES addresses a range of environmental challenges that are critical to the well-being of our society and planet, working in close collaboration with leaders across disciplines, industry, and government.

Dowd Illustration Research Archive

The Dowd Illustration Research Archive focuses on 20th century illustration. The collection includes artists’ working materials and sketches as well as original artwork from books, magazines, and advertising. Professor D.B. Dowd serves as director of the, which has strong ties to the School’s MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture program.

The Engaged City

The Engaged City is a collaboration between the Center for the Humanities, the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity, and the Office for Socially Engaged Practice at Washington University in St. Louis. Funded by a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the Office of the Provost, the Engaged City aims to highlight St. Louis’ cultural resources — and to reframe how the city sees, understands and talks about itself.

Sumner StudioLab

The Sumner StudioLab is a collaboration between the Sumner Advisory Board, 4theVille, and Washington University in St. Louis’s Center for the Humanities and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Programming at the StudioLab builds upon the robust Sumner Recovery Plan initiatives. The program brings together Sumner High students, WashU students, and Ville residents in a Community Hub to discuss and design Sumner’s historic legacies and promising futures.

CLEAN STL

Contaminant Level Evaluation and Analysis for Neighborhoods (CLEAN STL) is providing St. Louis residents with clear, reliable information about the safety of the air and soil in their homes, parks, and beyond to help them make informed choices as the community rebuilds.
