Survival Blanket (Decolonize the Garden from Seeds to Bees)
Commissioned by the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Part of Chávez’s ongoing Survival Blankets series, this floor-based installation combines plants, seeds, and found objects arranged on a reflective Mylar blanket. A textile reading “Decolonize the Garden from Seeds to Bees” introduces the work’s themes, while an accompanying video documents a workshop with Indigenous (Diné) horticulturalist Rico Rose on native plants and seed saving.
