Q&A with Josiah Gooden

A conversation with Josiah Gooden, who graduates in May 2024 with a BS in architecture.

How has your creative work changed from four years ago?
My creative work has developed to express my creative voice, which has been growing since high school. I can critically think about my designs: how they may be perceived and how the audience would interact with the medium. While designing, I try to envision myself moving through the design and try to cultivate spatial experiences.

What is a small thing you learned in class that’s had a big impact on your work?
When presenting your work, present on the decisions made, not the decisions you considered but did not execute. Walk your audience through your process to strengthen your project; intention can lead to confidence while presenting.

What’s something new you tried?
While studying architecture, I was able to explore courses relating to film and learn Hebrew. A few times throughout my undergrad career I was able to take various film courses and loved how they changed my understanding of visual media. In my senior year, I was able take Introduction to Modern Hebrew and have been enjoying the language.

What are you planning to do next?
I’m planning to attend WashU for graduate studies. I have already been accepted into the two-year Master of Architecture program. Afterwards, I plan to work in the architectural industry.
