The printmaking concentration in the BFA in Studio Art program at WashU’s Sam Fox School emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach across artistic disciplines within a close-knit community where faculty deeply engage with students and their work.

The program emphasizes both traditional and contemporary practices, fostering creativity, technical proficiency, and critical thinking. With expansive, state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty, the concentration offers opportunities to collaborate with visiting artists at Island Press, explore innovative methods, and apply skills learned in foundational courses to self-directed studio work.

COURSES AND STUDENT WORK

Courses emphasize both traditional and contemporary practices, fostering creativity, technical proficiency, and critical thinking. Foundational courses introduce students to a variety of essential techniques including intaglio, lithography, relief, and screen printing. Advanced Art Practice classes encourage students to apply these foundational skills to self-directed studio work.

Intro to Printmaking

This survey of printmaking covers basic processes in intaglio, lithography, relief, and monotype. Mixed media and experimentation are emphasized with a foundation in traditional, historical, and philosophical aspects of printmaking.

Propaganda to Decoration

This course explores print multiples from propaganda to decoration, examining accessibility, reproduction, and distribution in public and private realms through various print media techniques.

Extra Dimensional Printmaking

This advanced studio pushes the boundaries of prints into sculpture, installation, and time-based work. With an emphasis on print as theatre, students explore relief, silkscreen, and intaglio processes.
