Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Visiting Artist Lecture: Richie Pope

Richie Pope will deliver the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Visiting Artist Lecture online. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Pope is a multidisciplinary artist from Newport News, Virginia. Growing up with a love of video games, cartoons, comic books, and ‘90s-00s Black music, he inevitably majored in illustration at VCU from 2004 to 2009.

Pope would go on to become a freelance illustrator, working with major publications like The New York Times and The New Yorker over a decade, including many smaller publications, winning placements in American Illustration, Spectrum, and The Society of Illustrators.

In 2014, Pope jumped back into comics, attending major indie shows over the years such as Small Press Expo, Comic Arts LA, and Comic Arts Brooklyn, among others, and winning the coveted Ignatz Award for Outstanding Artist for his self-published comic That Box We Sit On.

During the summer of 2019, Pope moved to Los Angeles, took a break from illustration, and started working in animation, doing freelance design for Netflix’s Battle Kitty and storyboards for City for Ghosts. By the end of that year, he was hired to do revisions and storyboards on Craig of the Creek, where he currently calls home.
