Architecture Faculty Lecture: Igor Marjanović & Katerina Ruedi-Ray

Igor Marjanović, the JoAnne Stolaroff Cotsen Professor and chair of undergraduate architecture in the Sam Fox School, and Katerina Rüedi Ray, professor of art history at Bowling Green State University’s School of Art, will deliver an online lecture titled Marina City.

Structure. Deal. Image. These words summarize a wide array of cultural production that architect Bertrand Goldberg used in order to realize Marina City, one of the largest mixed-use urban complexes of its time. They are also the key chapters in Marina City: Bertrand Goldberg’s Urban Vision, a book that provides close reading of this unique urban development. Building upon this critically acclaimed volume, the lecture situates Goldberg’s work within the larger socio-political context of the twentieth century. It tells the story of architect’s intersections with social ideals, movements and organizations—from Weimar Germany’s short-lived social democracy to post-war Chicago Democratic politics, Marina City is a tale of many socio-economic variables that underpin architectural production, including the role of labor unions in shaping one of the most iconic buildings of the modern movement.
