Projected Destruction by Marco Moreno Donohoe
Marco Moreno Donohoe, a senior in architecture, won third prize and a student award in Buildner’s annual competition memorializing the last nuclear bomb and the United Nations 2017 adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Participants are tasked with designing a memorial on decommissioned nuclear weapon testing sites that meaningfully engages with the public.
Donohoe’s “Projected Destruction,” sets the memorial within a crater. “A striking linear structure cuts through the void, acting as both a bridge and a viewing platform, inviting visitors to experience the vastness of destruction. The interplay of light and shadow within the perforated walls creates dynamic spatial effects, offering different perspectives from above and within. The scale and placement evoke a sense of isolation and reflection.”
