Q&A with Luiz Ludwig

Assistant Professor Luiz Ludwig joined the Sam Fox School in 2025. In this Q&A, he shares what excites him about design and teaching in the MDes for HCI and Emerging Technology.
What is your research area?
My work is mostly about data visualization, interaction, and interface design. I focus on exploring how we can design meaningful ways for people to engage with data. We live in a world full of information, so I’m interested in how, as designers and artists, we can bring the discussion about data into focus.
What are you most excited to teach?
I’m most excited to teach the Ix3 studio, where I can support and guide students in their projects. I enjoy raising questions and even more importantly, helping students develop their own questions. Who is it for, how does it work, why does it matter? These and many other questions push the projects further.
What excites you about this field?
Working with interaction has a strong connection to technology. What excites me is thinking about how we can use technology to create real impact. For me, it’s essential to approach projects with social, environmental, and economic sustainability in mind, and choosing the right technology is key to making that possible. We are not just fans of technology, we are here to analyze the impacts, both positive and negative, that technology can have on society.
What's a design flaw you'd like to fix?
Too often, design is seen as an individual activity. The way we approach design here is through a collaborative perspective. Instead of designers working alone, we encourage them to engage with communities, conduct research, and establish dialogue. Opportunity comes from this mix of their perception and external inputs.
