Staff Announcement: Stephen Deaderick

The Sam Fox School is pleased to share that Stephen Deaderick will join the Sam Fox School on June 1, 2021, as our Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

This newly created position is a timely and critical one for our School. Deaderick will build on the momentum and existing efforts undertaken by our faculty, staff, and students to increase the diversity of our community and promote a culture and ethos that values diversity, inclusion, and equitable success. His chief duties will include ensuring high-quality programming, spearheading diversity communications efforts, ensuring diverse hiring and recruitment strategies, serving as a resource for members across our community, supporting diverse and inclusive curricula, and fostering inclusion in our teaching, learning, making, and working environments.

Currently working as an Assistant Director of Residence Life at Tulane University, Deaderick has dedicated much of his career to diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Prior to Tulane, Deaderick worked on the Social Justice Engagement team in the Multicultural Center at The Ohio State University, where he facilitated dialogues and workshops on social justice topics and collaborated with students, staff, and faculty on educational initiatives. Deaderick has been an active leader for several years in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrator’s Asian Pacific Islander Knowledge Community, has presented at national conferences including the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity, and has served as a staff member for the Semester at Sea program. Stephen holds a B.A. in Sociology and Educational Studies from Emory University, an M.Ed. in Student Affairs from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University.

Deaderick approaches the work of education and equity by leading with questions and curiosity and centering the importance of identities. Educating himself, he says, includes both learning and unlearning. Outside of work, Deaderick enjoys teaching indoor cycling classes, trying local restaurants, and spending time with his husband Tyler (a WashU alum!) and their dog Bruce.
